The Dogs of Isham Park's official WATCHDOG wants to remind all of basic safety tips to stay safe

· Be aware of who is around you.

· If you are alone, DO NOT wear headphones or talk on cell phones,especially iPods and iphones.

· A group of 3 to 4 teens have been working together. One approaches you from the front and the others lurk behind you; the one in the front and asks you for the time before they rob/assault you.

· If you are being mugged then it's better to give the mugger what he/she wants. Your life is worth more than the cash/electronic product!

· Call or have someone call 911 and stay until a full report is given to the NYPD.

· Use caution when using ATMs and don't carry too much cash around with you -- most places accept credit cards and there are ATMs everywhere.

· After dark, stick to main streets or walk up Broadway and then up 218th. If you have doubts, listen to your instincts; take a cab, especially late at night.

· If taking the subway late at night, stand near the "During off hours trains stop here" sign or in view of the Metro-Card booth. Ride in cars with more people and preferably in the conductor's car (you will see him/her look out the window of the train when it stops). Try to wait for others that are going your way and walk together.

According to local groups, the days between October 17th and the first week in November are "official" gang initiation weeks. Try to be especially vigiliant when you are out with or without your dog(s).

Remember to take your cell phone with you and if any group causes you supsicion call the 34th Pct. at 212-927-0576 or 911 IMMEDIATELY.

Do not second guess yourself.

To maintain the area with organized activities and clean-up dates and by supporting and sponsoring ongoing cultural, neighborhood activities held in Isham Park.

To establish a positive relationship with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation manager by encouraging an educated dog-friendly community and by installing a dog clean-up station.

To provide a strong deterrent against crime in the park in the late evening and early morning hours.

Emergency Town Hall Meeting Called

A special Town Hall meeting has been arranged by Assembly member Adriano Espaillat for Thursday, June 25th at 7:00pm at the Northeastern Academy located on West 215th Street [between Park Terrace East & West].

Invitations have gone out to all City Agencies and Public Officials [including the Mayor’s Office, 34th Police Precinct, Department of Parks & Recreation, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Community Board 12, etc.].

This is a chance to draw Attention to and DEMAND public service accountability for our concerns about public safety and quality of life issues in Inwood.

Isham Park has seen a recent increase in assaults during the evening hours. The earliest time was 6:30 pm, the evening of the park concert (June 8th).

After long conversation/discussions with the 34 Pct., it was revealed that there are NO NYPD FOOT PATROLS assigned to Isham Park. This alone is ridiculous. We have to organize to take back our park and make it a safe space for all.

Dogs are never allowed off-leash during the hours that most children play in Isham Park. The Off-leash Hours generally take effectfrom 9pm to 9am, but are restricted and conform to the official closing and opening hours of each individual New York City park.

Dog owners, like those of Dogs of Isham Park, take a great interest in keeping the parks clean and safe and work hard to self-police off-leash rules in the parks to preserve the 20 year old Off-leash Hours policy. We are willing to pay for and maintain a "doggie station" equipped with bags and waste receptacles.We are the most frequent users of NYC parks, utilizing the parks in all four seasons, in all types of weather, day and night, every day of the year.

Impomptu Grassroots Neighborhood Meeting!! June 19th, Isham Park at 7 pm

Spoke via email with an "Erin" from another group. She's trying to organize our area before the general emergency meeting on the 25th. She's asking for people to come to Isham Park this Friday the 19th @ 7pm to discuss strategies...rain place...Indian Road Cafe.

I told her we are also organizing and maybe we can support each other at the general meeting. similar issues/concerns sans dogs; she's angry and motivated and may be a good ally for our agenda.

If you're available...maybe you can consider meeting w/her on Friday or pass this on to other interested parties

Dogs of Isham Park, a grassroots neighborhood group, is committed to DEVELOPING, SUPPORTING, and MAINTAINING a restricted off-leash section in an appropriate area of Isham Park in accordance with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation guidelines.

Our Goals :
